Kirka National Park

Once you arrive in the town of Scardona, you hop on one of the park boats to head to the Skradinski Buk waterfalls.

A very unusual rock formation

The Skradinski Buk waterfalls are a collection of 17 waterfalls, and the only way to see them in their entirety is from the boat, a quite a distance.

Krka National Park is named after the river Krka. The park was established to protect the Krka River and is primarily intended for scientific, cultural, educational, recreational, and tourism activities.

Lots and lots of swans grace the shores as you take the boat to the falls

The Jaruga Hydroelectric Plant is the first thing you see upon alighting from the boat.

A short walk and you see all that you can see of the falls without hiking into the woods.

Brown trout and Dalmatian barbelgudgeon are a couple of fish that can be found in the ecosystem.

There are other small falls to enjoy in the park.

Lapuri Tower

This was not an intended stop; it just grabbed my attention while driving on a country road. It was apparently a defense tower built by laying stone blocks of different sizes in rows.

Saint Nicholas Fort

St Nicholas Fort

St Nicholas Fort is on the outskirts of the town of  Šibenik, and is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list as part of “Venetian Works of Defense between 16th and 17th centuries.

The fortress was designed and built by the famous Venetian architect and builder Giangirolamo Sanmicheli. It was built in the 16th century to prevent Turkish boats from reaching the port. St. Nicholas Fortress was armed with 32 cannons.

The fortress is one of the most valuable and best-preserved examples of defensive architecture in Dalmatia. It is made of brick because that material was considered to be most resistant to cannonballs, while the foundations are made of stone.

Hotel Marina Lucica

After a long, windy road because Google Maps got us lost, we finally arrived at this abandoned hotel. It is near the Marina Lucica beach near the town of Sibenik. The hotel, once the luxury Hotel Marina Lucica, was a stunning destination with unique terrace architecture and breathtaking views of Primosten. It has sadly succumbed to nature’s reclaiming touch and vandalism.
